AuSABLE TWP. – A public hearing to amend its zoning ordinance to include medical marijuana (MMJ) definitions and include guidelines for MMJ facilities in the township was held by the AuSable Township Planning Commission on Aug. 16.
The commission unanimously approved the proposed addition, which will be sent to the Iosco County Planning Commission for a 30-day review period. Once the county commission has the opportunity to weigh in, the proposed amendments will go before the AuSable Board of Trustees for final approval.
One person spoke to the commission during the hearing. Deborah Dexel of Oscoda said that she is someone who is prescribed MMJ for medical reasons. Before using the substance, she was not herself because of other medications she was prescribed to battle ovarian cancer.
Dexel said the other medications caused her to experience severe mood swings and other adverse affects which prevented her from living life as normally as she could, as well as affecting relationships with family and friends.
