Chicagoan Brad Zerman has filed an application with the State of Illinois to operate a medical marijuana dispensary in Highland Park.Zerman, president of Sky Processing Inc., an ATM processing firm, has applied for one of the three licenses allocated for Lake County in the Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana legislation signed into law in 2013.A state summary of applications released Oct. 2 showed that five of the 214 applications to operate medical marijuana dispensaries were for locations in Lake County.While declining to disclose the specific location, Zerman said the location is within the general Skokie Highway corridor area where most eligible sites in Highland Park are located.In an Oct. 2 letter to Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering, Zerman informed the city that his limited liability corporation, Future Transactions Holdings, had filed for a state license to open a dispensary. The prospective dispensary operator submitted the application to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation within the allotted period between Sept. 8 and Sept. 22.His team of investors also has applied for licenses to operate dispensaries in Oak Park and Evanston.The agency is expected to grant dispensary licenses by the end of the year so the facilities can be open for business in early 2015.The City of Highland Park has not finalized its zoning regulations for medical marijuana dispensaries or cultivation centers. The plan commission is set to resume deliberations and take additional testimony at its Oct. 7 meeting. The panel’s recommendation will be forwarded to the city council.Given the tight timetable, Zerman is urging the city council to “act with due deliberate speed” in reviewing the plan commission’s recommendation.“The viability of any state license application for a Highland Park location will depend on whether the city has adopted local …read more
