East Dundee officials disagree on site for dispensary – Elgin Courier News

Location, location, location. That’s an issue East Dundee officials are grappling with when it comes to finding the right spot for a medical marijuana dispensary.“We, just like every other town, are very limited on where these can be allowed,” said Village President Lael Miller.State law indicates that the facilities cannot be within residential areas or near schools.Village officials have been approached by someone who has proposed opening a dispensary in the former A Tech Computer Service Inc., building at 296 Williams Place, near Haeger Potteries.“It’s been a number of things over the years,” Miller said. “But that was one of the places that has been proposed simply due to the fact that it meets the distance requirements from schools.”In order for a medical marijuana dispensary to go in that location, officials would have to amend the village’s zoning code to make pharmacies and drug stores permitted into an M-1, or limited manufacturing, district. Not all board members are on board with doing that.At a meeting in September, Trustee Rob Gorman said he did not like the idea of the dispensary being so close to residential properties.“I would oppose the pharmacy if that is where the location is supposed to go,” he said. “It’s a perception. You’d be effectively changing the property values when you put a dispensary across the street. It’s changing the community for them.”He questioned why one couldn’t be located in an empty River Street building.Miller said it’s not a viable location because of the building size.“It would meet the need from a distance requirement but it’s not an adequately sized building,” he said.At Monday’s board meeting, trustees opted to table the issue for more discussion.Tags: Medical Marijuana <iframe …read more
