South Elgin takes new direction on dispensary locations – Elgin Courier News

SOUTH ELGIN — If the village allows a medical marijuana dispensary to locate here, it will not be in the business district according to a vote Monday night.South Elgin’s village board voted 3-2 to not approve a text amendment to its zoning ordinance that would have allowed a dispensary in retail-zoned locations.Trustees Lisa Guess, John Sweet and Robert Sauceda voted against the change. Mike Kolodziej and Jennifer Barconi voted in favor. The vote leaves South Elgin’s moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries or growing operations in place, said Steve Super, village administrator. The village’s community development staff had recommended on Aug. 4 a text amendment to the zoning ordinance that would have allowed a dispensary in retail areas as opposed to industrial-zoned areas. The board members voting against that this week indicated they were uncomfortable with placing the dispensaries in a retail area.Guess was one of those who felt industrial zoning makes more sense, partially because traffic to the dispensary would likely be lighter than other retail uses.“I didn’t feel there would be the volume of business that you would think of at a typical business, so it is better in an industrial area than a business district,” Guess said. She isn’t opposed to allowing a dispensary in the village, Guess said. “It is just better in an industrial area and last night was for business zoning.”South Elgin has been approached by Solace Solutions, LLC, to place a dispensary in the village. There are currently as many as 14 different entities seeking those two licenses, according to state data.Solace Solutions will be before the Planning and Zoning Commission for a public hearing on Oct. 15.
