Officers responded to the 11700 block of Ventura Boulevard (map) at around 10:45 p.m. after workers inside the business heard people breaking in to the store, according to Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Gardner.
The dispenary’s owner, Sam Humeid, immediately called 911 to alert police upon seeing them enter on one of the store’s surveillance cameras.
“Once they busted in, it turned into panic mode,” Humeid said.
While the burglars ransacked the shop, Humeid said he and two employees hid inside a store bathroom.
The trio, armed only with two pens and a fire extinguisher, had no idea whether the intruders had weapons, Humeid said.
He described the frightening ordeal as they waited for law enforcement to arrive.
“Being trapped in the bathroom, all you heard was just a lot of noise, like banging, things were crashing… you’re expecting gunshots at any minute,” Humeid said. “It was terrifying.”
When police arrived, the two burglars were still inside the dispensary, Gardner said.
With guns drawn, officers smashed in the glass front door to get inside the store, video from the scene showed.
Two people were taken into custody in connection with the incident, according to Gardner.
