DECATUR — The prospect of cultivating a cannabis dispensary in Decatur fell on stony ground after the issue was raised before the City Council.

An attempt to plant just a seed of the concept for discussion was made by Councilman David Horn, who noted the surrounding communities of Forsyth and Mount Zion were chewing over the issue of allowing dispensaries.

“It has been nearly five years since the city council formally discussed having a dispensary and other cannabis-related businesses in the city,” Horn said.

“If the estimates are correct, we’ve lost about $2 million in revenue to other municipalities. I believe after five years, it is time to once again have a formal discussion like our other municipalities are.”

Opposition to the idea from several of his colleagues, however, was immediate and uncompromising at Monday’s council meeting.

Councilman Chuck Kuhle told Horn he had attended a recent Forsyth Village Board public meeting on the cannabis issue to voice his opposition.

“I would just like you to know, Councilman Horn… I was adamant that they not approve a dispensary in Forsyth,” Kuhle said.
