THERE is need to digitise hospitals and other health facilities to improve efficiency in stock management and accountability in dispensary of drugs. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) chief adviser Norizuki Masataro says lack of electronic systems in hospitals is making it difficult, especially for pharmacists, to manage stocks. Dr Masataro said this is despite the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA), which dispatches drugs and other medical supplies to health facilities, being well digitalised. He said in an interview that manual counting of medicines and other stock is time-consuming.
Dr Masataro said once implemented, the digital system will help reduce the workload on health workers. “In supermarkets, everything is located very well and they have barcodes for scanning and counting.
