Letter: Downtown is no place for cannabis business – Red Bluff Daily News

Cannabis is legal; dispensaries provide large sales tax revenue to cities. Appropriate locations for a cannabis dispensary would be in industrial and commercial zoning designations — away from family-oriented spaces. It is not a mistake that dispensaries are forbidden to be within 600 yards from schools and daycare centers.

The building at 723 Main St. (a proposed location for a cannabis dispensary) is currently recognized and advertised as a family restaurant. It is in the heart of our downtown shopping district. Through many years, our city and local business owners, chamber of commerce and out local development corporation and others have been working on encouraging local and visiting families to attend family healthy downtown Main Street functions year-round, including retail sidewalk sales; antique car shows; monster truck exhibits; art walks; downtown farmers market; our annual rodeo parade and decorating contest; our Christmas Parade and lighting of the Christmas tree and our Halloween Treat Street day where families bring their costumed youth to stroll into each downtown business for Halloween. Through the years we have promoted our historic State Theatre by providing children and family-oriented performances and shows year-round. It is 1.5 blocks walking distance from the proposed cannabis dispensary.
