Knoxville, Tenn. (UT Sports)– Tennessee junior Danielle Marcano and redshirt freshman Erin Gilroy scored in an offensive flurry midway through the second half Saturday to lift the Volunteers a 2-0 first-round win in the NCAA soccer tournament versus Murray State.

Neither the Vols (15-4-1) nor the Murray State Racers (15-2-2) could find any room to breathe in the first period, but goals by Marcano and Gilroy in the 59th and 63rd minutes respectively led Tennessee into the second round of the tournament for the first time since 2007.

The Vols will play Friday against Washington State, who defeated No. 2-seeded UCF 1-0. Time and location will be determined by the NCAA.

Saturday’s game at Regal Soccer Stadium entered halftime 0-0 as neither team found it easy to take shots. The Vols took four shots to the Racers three.

In the second half, Marcano broke through to put the Vols on the scoreboard with her second goal of the season. She took a pass from Gilroy, evaded defenders and put the ball into the corner.

Four minutes later, Gilroy had a score of her own, taking a long pass from defender Maya Neal for her fourth goal of the season.

Tennessee outshot Murray State 11 to 6. Marcano led with three shots, two of them on goal.

SHUTOUT NO. 10: Tennessee recorded its 10th shutout of the season and the first since defeating Georgia 4-0 on Oct. 13. Shae Yanez has recorded nine complete game shutouts.
