Arizona bill would reclaim marijuana social equity licenses – Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting

Arizona lawmakers are pushing to return social equity licenses for marijuana dispensaries to their original owners, alleging private investors and cannabis corporations used predatory tactics to seize control of nearly all the lucrative licenses.

Senate Bill 1262, introduced by Republican Sen. Sonny Borrelli, seeks to restore power to those the state’s social equity program was actually meant to benefit: people from marginalized communities disproportionately affected by past marijuana convictions. It would also allow the state Attorney General’s Office to investigate and punish entities that exploited those individuals.

“What we have here is an injustice that needs to be fixed,” Borrelli, of Lake Havasu City, said during a Feb. 13 Senate hearing. “We now have here in Arizona a situation where 24 of 26 of these social equity licenses are now fully controlled by companies or people who do not belong in these special groups to get this license.”

The legislation comes less than a year after extensive reporting by AZCIR showed the social equity program—part of a 2020 ballot initiative that legalized recreational marijuana in Arizona—was not working as intended, with powerful players hijacking much of the process.

Today, just one original applicant fully owns their social equity license and

Local medical cannabis dispensary reacts to MSDH pulling Rapid Analytics License – WLBT

PEARL, Miss. (WLBT) – WLBT first told you Thursday about the State Department of Health pulling Rapid Analytics’ license after a nearly 2-month investigation.

Many dispensaries have been impacted during that time.

Dispensaries like Cream Cannabis and growing facilities throughout the state took the worst of the administrative hold and investigation into Rapid Analytics.

Things are trending in the right direction though as more flowers hit the shelves, but they still have yet to put out any of their edible products tested by Rapid.

There is a worry among workers in the cannabis industry that this could spark fear among patients.

“I’m just really hoping that it doesn’t scare off anybody that’s looking to get their card thinking that you know, there was ever any pesticides or anything in the product,” Christian Gallagher, the manager of Cream Cannabis Company in Pearl said. “I want people to understand that Mississippi products are good and safe and that we’re all working towards the same goal here. It’s a good medicine for the people.”

Cream Cannabis now has about 75% of the Rapid Analytics tested products back out for patients after they were re-tested by MSDH, and they expect operations will slowly return to normal since the investigation is

A lineup formed ahead of the grand opening of UBC’s first near-campus cannabis store, Burb, on Friday morning.

While the store boasted that its opening marked the first major university campus in the country to open a cannabis retail store, a UBC spokesperson correctly stated that the location is technically off-campus

Still, it’s a lot closer than the other legal dispensaries in the area, something that some students took advantage of on Friday as they crowded inside to check out the offerings.

Mississippi cannabis dispensary businesses slowed by product holds – WJTV

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Cannabis dispensaries across Mississippi have felt the burn after several products were placed on hold, but they remain optimistic about the future.

The dispensaries saw several strands of cannabis products being placed on hold due to levels of pesticides. Some dispensaries have shut down.

Uptown Funk Dispensary celebrated its one year anniversary this month.

“A lot of the products that they were used to getting and have been using and that have been helping them. They’re not able to get right now because, you know, everything’s going through retesting, and there’s just a lot slower process than we anticipated,” said Andrew Kraninger, the inventory manager at the business.

MSDH moves to revoke license of medical marijuana testing facility

The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), through the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program (MMCP), announced its intent to revoke the license of a medical cannabis testing facility, Rapid Analytics.

“When we explained that the state has checks and balances that have to be put in place and that they’re going back double-checking things, making sure everything’s okay. That’s what we do want to hear. But at that mass, in large quantities, it

Seventy-six-year-old Sue Taylor sees great promise in the cannabis sector.

During an interview with ABC-7 News, the former Catholic school principal shares her joy in owning a Berkeley, CA, dispensary. She reportedly owns the first and only Black-woman-owned dispensary in the city.

“It was quite an honor. To be that representative,” Taylor mentioned to the outlet. “So many African Americans — it’s people of color who were incarcerated for cannabis from the get, right, from the beginning. It was us. And so to have an African-American family open up a dispensary such as this, it gave us a lot of pride.”

The feat would not have been possible if she had not adjusted her initial hesitation surrounding the use of cannabis, she says. Only when she witnessed its benefits for seniors combined with the the loss of a dear friend to cancer did she finally understand.

“I feel some kind of way in my heart that I didn’t serve her well because my mindset wasn’t on cannabis. Because I was secretly afraid of it because of the ‘reefer madness’ that was instilled in me as I was growing up,” Taylor said, according to ABC-7 News.

MD Nears 100 Dispensaries: Where To Find Them As Industry Grows – Patch

This story was written and reported by Patch Editor Jacob Baumgart.

MARYLAND — The state of Maryland is preparing to license its next round of dispensaries. This signals further growth for an industry that’s boomed since recreational marijuana was legalized on July 1, 2023.

The state has 96 dispensaries, which are listed at the bottom of this story.

Maryland officials are in the process of awarding another 83 dispensary licenses. Seventy-five will be standard dispensaries, and eight will be micro, delivery-only dispensaries. The state will also award licenses for 40 growers (16 standard and 24 micro) and 56 processors (32 standard and 24 micro).

Maryland received 1,708 applications for these 179 available licenses by the December 2023 deadline. A lottery will now distribute the licenses.

“Today’s announcement is another step forward in fulfilling Maryland’s commitment to building an equitable and inclusive cannabis industry,” Maryland Cannabis Administration Acting Director Will Tilburg said in a September 2023 press release announcing the application window. “This application round will more than double the number of cannabis businesses in the State, and each award will be to a verified social equity applicant.”

Recreational marijuana started with a bang and has continued to scale ever since.
