Plans for Elgin’s first recreational pot store have fallen through – Chicago Tribune

High Haven Cannabis’ plan to open Elgin’s first recreational marijuana dispensary in a Randall Road strip mall has fallen through following a contract disagreement with the building’s owner.

Elgin City Councilman Steve Thoren announced the news at the Wednesday night council meeting, calling the deal’s failure “disappointing.”

In April, the council approved High Haven’s plans to open a dispensary at 353–355 S. Randall Road.

High Haven, a social equity applicant for a state cannabis license, told the council they were going to spend $700,000 remodeling the interior of the store and installing tight security so the 3,200-square-foot space would meet state standards for an adult-use cannabis business.

However, a clause in the contract led to the deal falling apart, said Thoren, who is friends with High Haven CEO Mahja Sulemanjee-Bortocek. The clause required High Haven to pay the rent of any tenant who moved out because of the proximity to the cannabis business for the next 12 years.

High Haven requested the clause be removed from the contract, but the building owner would not amend it, Thoren said.

“Finally, (Sulemanjee-Bortocek) had to pull the plug so (that location is) off the table,” he said.

Sulemanjee-Bortocek couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday.

Waterbury approves cannabis dispensary; second proposed retailer … – Hartford Business Journal

A cannabis dispensary tied to Missouri-based retail chain Shangri-La was approved by Waterbury’s Zoning Commission Wednesday, while another multi-state company seeking to open a different retail location in the city gained a continuance to explore a possible legal issue with its proposal.

In its application, the Shangri-La affiliates say they plan to open a 3,000-square-foot dispensary at 99 Brookside Road, in Waterbury.

Founded in Columbia, Missouri in 2021, Shangri-La started with a focus on medical cannabis, and has since expanded operations to Ohio, South Dakota, Illinois and Connecticut.

Its Waterbury operation will have a 550-square-foot sales floor, with the remaining 2,450 square feet serving as a secure vault for product, administrative offices and a waiting area, according to its application. The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with 12 to 15 staff working at any one time, according to the application.

Applicants affiliated with Chicago-based cannabis packaging and retailing giant Green Thumb Industries Inc. applied to operate a 5,000-square-foot cannabis retail shop at 53 Interstate Lane, an industrial area just off the busy Reidville Drive retail corridor.

Attorney Christopher Russo asked for, and received, a continuance for that application until Nov. 16, in

When Wisconsinites buy legal marijuana in neighboring states – PBS Wisconsin

Wisconsin is surrounded by legal marijuana, with both Illinois and Michigan legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in the last few years and Minnesota voting to do the same earlier this year.

The Wisconsin Policy Forum estimates more than half of all state residents over the age of 21 live within a 75-minute drive to a legal dispensary, and that number will only increase as Minnesota’s dispensaries start opening in the next couple of years.

This trend leaves Wisconsin residents and law enforcement caught in a gray area, where a product purchased legally in another state becomes illegal the minute it crosses the border.

The Highway 41 bridge travels over the Menominee River, carrying you out of Wisconsin, and into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Take the first right, and you’re in the parking lot of a recreational marijuana dispensary.

If you go through the drive-thru, you don’t even need to exit your car to purchase legal marijuana products and start the drive back across the river.

“Yeah, just a really optimal location,” said Lindsay Martwick, the director of retail operations for Higher Love. She noted most of their customers are from over the border.

“A good majority are folks from Wisconsin,”

Applicants recruited on Craigslist competed for Missouri social … – Missouri Independent

James Harnden has been a longtime activist for cannabis legalization, ever since he got slapped with a low-level felony possession charge for having an ounce of weed.

The 56-year old Rockford, Ill., resident says that charge has cost him job opportunities for 30 years.

Earlier this year, he saw an advertisement in the Craigslist “gigs” section posted by a Michigan cannabis real estate group called Canna Zoned MLS. It was looking for “partners who qualify as a social equity applicant” to participate in Illinois’ lottery to award cannabis business licenses that are, in part, meant to benefit people impacted by marijuana criminalization.

“I spent most of my life applying for jobs and not getting them,” Harnden said. “So I’m like, ‘Okay, so maybe one of these licenses will swing my way.’”

The Craigslist ad read: “If you are eligible and provide the required documentation, we will give you $2,000, just for helping us submit the lottery application! If we win the lottery and secure a license, we will give you an additional $20,000!”

Need to get in touch? Have a news tip?

Harnden says what he didn’t realize was that he signed a contract

Poll: Nearly 70% of Kansans Back Adult-Use Cannabis Legalization

Nearly 70% of Kansans support adult-use cannabis legalization, according to the Kansas Speaks survey conducted by Fort Hays State University. The survey found 67.2% backed the reforms with 16.9% opposed.

The survey also found a majority – 63.6% – of respondents were “highly” or “somewhat” likely to vote for a candidate who supported medical cannabis legalization as they decided who to vote for to represent them in the state legislature; 14.8% said they would “unlikely” vote for a candidate who backed the reforms.

Adult-use legalization was backed by a majority of Kansans of all ages, although narrowly, including 67.8% of those polled aged 18-34; 76.4% of those 45-44 years old; 67.3% of those 45-64; and 59.1% of those 65-and-older. A majority of Republicans (60%) also supported adult-use legalization in the state, along with 76.1% of independents, and 72.7% of Democrats.

In March, the state Senate tabled a medical cannabis legalization bill and the state remains one of just four where cannabis remains outlawed for any purpose. The reforms have the support of Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly who said she was “disappointed that some legislators are saying they don’t want to move

Researchers Net $3.2 Federal Grant to Study How Cannabis Affects Patients Who Receive Immunotherapy

A University at Buffalo (UB) researcher has been awarded a $3.2 million National Cancer Institute grant to study how cannabis affects patients who receive immunotherapy. According to Rebecca Ashare, PhD, associate professor of psychology in the UB College of Arts and Sciences and the grant’s lead investigator, up to 40% of cancer patients report using cannabis for symptom management during and after immunotherapy treatments, but there isn’t much rigorous research investigating the efficacy of using cannabis for that purpose.

“There are virtually no long-term studies evaluating its potential benefits and harms for persons treated with immunotherapy for cancer, despite cancer and its treatments being qualifying conditions in most of the 37 states and Washington, D.C., that have legalized adult use or medical cannabis. There are reports of benefits surrounding pain relief, improving mood and curbing sleep deprivation, but there is also evidence of physical, cognitive and mental harms, including cannabis use disorder.” — Ashare in a press release

Nearly 44% of cancer patients with 20 different tumor types receive immunotherapy treatment; notably, a specific type involving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Immune checkpoints are a normal part of the immune system that govern the immune response to

Plea in HC to establish Siddha dispensaries in temples – The Hindu

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday ordered notice to the State on a public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to the government to establish Siddha dispensaries in temples.

A Division Bench of Justices G. R. Swaminathan and P. Dhanabal ordered notice to the State on the petition filed by the Managing Trustee of the Indian Medicine Welfare Trust J. Jeyavenkatesh of Jaihindpuram in Madurai.

The petitioner, a Siddha practitioner, said that the State in 1970 had passed a government order to appoint Siddha doctors in temples having an income of ₹One lakh. Permission was also accorded to open Siddha dispensaries in 48 temples in the State. However, such posts were not filled for a long time, he said.

The State should take necessary steps to establish Siddha dispensaries in temples as per the G.O. issued in 1970, he said. The court adjourned the hearing in the case by six weeks.
