In a 6-5 vote, the Peoria City Council narrowly chose to defer its decision on a proposal for a new cannabis dispensary during its Tuesday meeting.
The vote came after a lengthy back-and-forth between council members and amid a number of unanswered questions about the future of the city’s cannabis policy.
The proposed dispensary site, located in northwest Peoria on Illinois Route 91, received the go-ahead from the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission in a nonbinding vote on Oct. 6. The petition to allow the dispensary will come back before the council in 30 days.
Tuesday’s vote came two weeks after the City Council held a policy session in which members discussed whether the city should implement new restrictions on the number of dispensaries allowed in the city and where they can be located as well as whether to allow on-site cannabis consumption at Peoria venues.
