Waukegan may soon be home to two cannabis dispensaries a half-mile apart; ‘I know we’ll be competitive’ – Chicago Tribune

With one cannabis dispensary getting its building permit with plans to open late this year or in early 2023 in Waukegan, a second larger marijuana shop hopes to welcome customers this spring a half-mile away, near the Fountain Square shopping center.

Earlier this month, operators of the proposed Planet 13 dispensary received a unanimous recommendation for a conditional use permit from the Waukegan Planning and Zoning Commission in a move which could add more than $800,000 in annual tax revenue for the city.

Noelle Kischer-Lepper, the city’s director of planning and economic development, said the City Council’s Community Development Committee will discuss the application and potentially make a recommendation to the council Dec. 5 at City Hall. A council vote is not yet scheduled.

Planet 13, which already operates dispensaries in Nevada and California, plans to open it first Illinois operation in a onetime bank building at 4000 Northpoint Blvd., just north of Fountain Square.
