A Worcester retail cannabis establishment which was previously approved in 2019 is finally planning to open next year, but under a new name.
Cannabis of Worcester LLC is the new operator of the dispensary planned for 62 Millbrook St., the former home of DeBoise Auto Body. The establishment was approved by the city’s License Commission Thursday morning, the final approval needed at the local level; it will now go to the state’s Cannabis Control Commission.
Attorney Joshua Lee Smith explained that the dispensary was originally proposed by Suns Mass II LLC and approved by both the city and the state. After the application was approved, the company completed both interior and exterior construction at the property.
However, in 2021, after construction was completed, Suns Mass’ parent company, Harvest Health and Recreation, merged with Trulieve, another cannabis company with three dispensary locations in Massachusetts, including one in Worcester. Because state regulations limit any one marijuana license holder to three retail licenses, the company was forced to relinquish the Millbrook Street license issued by the CCC.
The managers of the new operating company are Joseph Kachuroi, a former employee of Harvest, and Patrick Murphy, who owns several cannabis businesses in North Dakota.
