Giambra’s longtime pot advocacy continues with new dispensary – Buffalo News

Samantha Christmann

Former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra has been a vocal proponent of cannabis for a long time.

“I think the headline was ‘Giambra wants to legalize drugs’ or something like that. Twenty years ago, that was like dropping a bomb on the Buffalo Zoo,” Giambra said. “We took some criticism. A lot of criticism.”

Now, public opinion – and New York State law – have come around to his way of thinking, and Giambra is co-owner of a new state-licensed recreational cannabis dispensary called Honey at 2981 Delaware Ave. in Kenmore with business partner Darcell Thomas.

Thomas’ past cannabis conviction in New York State made the pair eligible for the Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary program, which granted dispensary licenses to justice-involved people as an attempt to redress communities harmed by the war on drugs.

“I have been publicly fighting prohibition of cannabis and in prohibition in general. As a student of history, it’s obvious that any attempts at prohibition in the past have been public failures,” Giambra said.

As a politician, he got a front row seat to see what happens when you “put people in jail for a

American Puffalo | Culture – CITY Magazine. Arts. Music. Culture.

For Bee Duangtavilay, opening cannabis dispensary Puffalo Dreams in Tonawanda, a suburb of Buffalo, was an opportunity to legitimize a business she was already familiar with.

Duangtavilay is a recreational user and spent time within the underground scene selling and distributing cannabis to maintain her livelihood.

“I knew cannabis was a way out of poverty for my family,” she said.

Duangtavilay was born in a Laotian refugee camp after her mom left Thailand, and she and her siblings have been manifesting a better life ever since. With various businesses under her belt — including a clothing boutique and some real estate property — a dispensary was another way to sustain her family’s legacy.

“Being able to come to America and live this dream,” she said, “it’s like you were meant to be here.”

Elevate weed dispensary in Mount Vernon operates, lacks key approvals – The Journal News

With a burst of fanfare, Westchester’s first cannabis dispensary opened on Feb. 20, with Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard claiming bragging rights as the county’s home for legal weed.

Beaming with pride, Patterson-Howard stood front and center with a pair of oversized scissors at the ribbon-cutting for Elevate, located on South Terrace Avenue in a neighborhood by the Mount Vernon West Metro-North station, with a mix of industrial buildings, two-family homes, and a church.

She was flanked by city Comptroller Darren Morton, Elevate owner John Ruggiero, and Chris Alexander, executive director of New York’s beleaguered Office of Cannabis Management.

Here was the chance for Alexander to snip the ribbon and welcome Westchester’s first legal adult-use retail outlet for recreational cannabis, located in a former auto-body shop that underwent a gut renovation in 2023 to emerge as the county’s flagship cannabis dispensary.

At long last, Westchester had a legal dispensary.

At a time of growing concern over illegal smoke shops in southern Westchester, Patterson-Howard viewed the retail cannabis outlet as a promising opportunity for economic development. A press release from the Mayor’s Office noted that Mount Vernon “is set to embrace the burgeoning legal cannabis market.”

“We are growing our industry,” said Patterson-Howard that chilly February morning.
