NC’s first marijuana dispensary set to open in Cherokee. Mark your calendar for … 420 – AOL

Joe MarusakFebruary 29, 2024 at 3:35 PM

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina has set an opening date for the only dispensary in the state to legally buy marijuana.

In a historic vote on Sept. 7, 2023, tribal members overwhelmingly approved adult use of marijuana on tribal land. The tribe on the 57,000-acre Qualla Boundary had already approved the use and controlled sale of medical cannabis.

Elder Cherokee women work together to trim leaves from dried cannabis stems for the flowers, so the remaining buds can be collected and used as product.

The tribe plans to open the dispensary on April 20, Lee Griffin, human resources director for the tribe’s cannabis subsidiary, Qualla Enterprises LLC, told the tribal council during a council work session on Wednesday.

April 20 is recognized by marijuana users and producers as the national cannabis holiday.

“Across the country, it’s the biggest revenue date for cannabis,” Griffin said, according to a Charlotte Observer review of the tribe’s recording of the meeting. “It’s like New Year’s Eve at the casino.”

Maryland dispensary fined $26k for selling dumpster cannabis – Green Market Report

Maryland cannabis company Curio Wellness was fined $26,000 by state regulators for reselling marijuana products some of its employees retrieved from a dumpster just weeks after adult-use sales began in the state.

An inventory manager identified as A.J. at Curio’s Far & Dotter dispensary, on the north side of Baltimore, alerted the Maryland Cannabis Administration last year to the episode, The Baltimore Banner reported.

According to an order from the MCA, the agency investigated and found that 224 grams – roughly half a pound – of cannabis product was thrown into a dumpster behind the dispensary on July 25, after the recreational market kickstarted on July 1.

Then on July 27, a trio of employees from the shop dug the goods out of the dumpster and took them back inside the store, where the manager on duty insisted on repackaging the marijuana and selling it, The Banner reported.

Curio disputed the characterization of the manager insisting on selling the cannabis in question, The Banner reported. Nevertheless, the dumpster cannabis – which needed repackaging because the original packaging was covered in some kind of “liquid” from the trash – was sold for $3,174.50.

The inventory manager who blew the whistle, A.J., said

Maryland dispensary fined $26,000 for selling cannabis that sat in dumpster for two days – CBS News

BALTIMORE — A Maryland dispensary has been fined $26,000 for selling cannabis that sat in a dumpster for two days, according to a consent order from the Maryland Cannabis Administration.

According to the consent order, 224 grams of cannabis were thrown into a dumpster outside Curio’s Far & Dotter dispensary, where it sat for 41 hours and nine minutes.

Surveillance footage showed three dispensary employees retrieving four boxes containing the pre-packaged product from the dumpster.  More footage showed another employee then repackage the cannabis, removing them from the original boxes, and placing them into plastic bags, before storing them inside a vault.

The employee informed an investigator from the MCA, that the cannabis had to be placed in the plastic bags because the original packages were covered in a liquid substance acquired from the dumpster, according to the order.

In an email, an inventory manager said he advised that the product be destroyed as it violates several compliance requirements, but management “insisted on not losing profit.”  Then, the location sold the product between July 28 and August 3, 2023, raking in a total of $3,174.50 in sales.

The manager’s employment at Far & Dotter was “terminated” on or about Aug. 20, 2023, according

Brooklyn’s first dispensary owned by a Black woman opened in Park Slope on Thursday as honor Mayor Eric Adams pledged to crack down on illegal weed stores in New York City.

Adams joined East New York resident Leeann Mata to celebrate her new shop, Matawana Cannabis Dispensary, at 5th Avenue and 14th Street. Matawana is the sixth legal dispensary to open in Kings County after the state resolved a long legal battle that held up licensing — the borough’s first legal retail marijuana store opened in Gravesend just over two months ago.

“I am encouraged to see the quickening pace of legal retail dispensary openings in the city and thank our colleagues at Cannabis NYC and the Office of Cannabis Management for all that they are doing to support the growth of the local market,” said Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development, and Workforce Maria Torres-Springer, in a statement.
