There will be no marijuana dispensaries in Madison Township. The township trustees voted unanimously at their regular meeting on Monday to pass a resolution that prohibits “adult use cannabis operators and medical marijuana cultivators, processors and retail dispensaries in the unincorporated area of Madison Township.”

According to the resolution, the action was allowed under Ohio Revised Code section 3780.25, which involves adult use cannabis operators and was effective Dec. 7, 2023, and section 3796.29 involving medical marijuana, which was effective Sept. 8, 2016. Section 3780 and was part of State Issue 2 that Ohio voters approved last November.

Trustees began reviewing a township resolution involving marijuana after officials of Backroad Wellness of Cambridge, Ohio, told the board at its Feb. 5 meeting that the medical marijuana company was looking at Madison Township as a possible location for a new retail facility. Company officials said the firm was allowed to open three more locations under recent legislation governing recreational marijuana and was looking at an undisclosed site where an existing building would be torn down and a new 4,000-square-foot facility would be constructed.

ASHEVILLE – While remaining in federal limbo and not legalized on the state-level, marijuana is still coming to North Carolina — just in a different way.

After the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians approved the adult use of recreational marijuana in September 2023, the first legal cannabis dispensary in North Carolina is set to open on ECBI land within the next two months.

The opening date will be on 4/20, according to Qualla Enterprises Human Resources Director Lee Griffin.

“That’s the national cannabis holiday,” Griffin said during a Feb. 28 Tribal Council work session on the adult use ordinance that would allow the recreational purchase of marijuana.

“It’s the biggest revenue date annually. It’s like New Year’s Eve at the casino.”

Seventeen years ago, the federal government raided Charlie Lynch’s medical marijuana dispensary in Morro Bay, California, and charged him with five drug felonies. A Vancouver mushroom dispensary that was raided by police in November 2023 and has continued to flout a city order to close its doors won a significant victory Tuesday at city hall in a controversial decision reached by council’s business licence review panel.

In a 2-1 vote led by Green Party councillors, the panel overturned a ruling of the city’s chief licence inspector Sarah Hicks to suspend the business licence of the Medicinal Mushroom Dispensary at 247 West Broadway.

“I’m very happy about this decision,” said Valentin Muller, director of 1394867 BC Ltd., which operates the dispensary. “I think it’s a good first step. And I hope that we can work together with the city going forward and find common ground and come up with a proper licensing system for businesses like ours.”

The panel’s decision also went against the recommendation of city lawyer Robert LeBlanc, who warned that the purpose of the hearing was “not to advance advocacy with respect to any safe supply, or sale of psychedelic drugs.”

A Vancouver City Council sub-committee has voted to reinstate the business license of a magic mushroom shop — drawing the ire of Vancouver’s mayor.

The business license hearing on Tuesday featured three city councillors — two Green Party and one ABC — who were drawn at random to vote on the reinstatement of The Medicinal Mushroom Dispensary’s license.

The dispensary on West Broadway was the target of a search warrant on Nov. 1, during which Vancouver police say they were raiding storefronts that sold illegal psychedelic drugs.

Councillor Pete Fry, who voted in favour of the motion alongside fellow Green councillor Adrienne Carr, says the decision was made because there wasn’t a clear history of multiple violations to back up the “gross misconduct” the dispensary was accused of.

He adds their decision was made based on the recommendations put forth by the city’s chief license inspector.

According to the business’ license application, it initially applied to sell “party supplies” and the city changed that to specify that the store sold “novelties.”

“We’ve suggested the licensee come back with requesting a license under something that’s a little more specific,” Fry said.

Pennington is about to get its own cannabis dispensary/retail store, according to local publication, Mercer Me. Some locals are saying it’s about time.
