Indian Tribe Plans To Open North Carolina’s First Marijuana Dispensary On 4/20 – Marijuana Moment

Following last year’s decision by members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (ECBI) to legalize cannabis for adult use, the tribe has set a target date to open retail sales: April 20, 2024. If all goes as planned, the launch will mark the first-ever legal marijuana sales within the borders of North Carolina.

“It’s the national cannabis holiday, right?” Lee Griffin, human resources director for the tribe’s marijuana business, Qualla Enterprises, said of the 4/20 start date during a ECBI tribal council work session on Wednesday. “Across the country, it’s the biggest revenue date annually” for cannabis.

“It’s like New Year’s Eve at the casino,” he said.

The retail store—located on the tribe’s 57,000-acre Qualla Boundary—will be open to any adult 21 and older, regardless of tribal membership.

Members of the tribe voted last September to legalize and regulate adult-use sales, approving a ballot measure with a strong 70 percent–30 percent margin.

Two years earlier, in 2021, ECBI’s Qualla Boundary became the first place in North Carolina where medical marijuana was legal after the tribal council adopted a regulated system. Registration for the program opened to all North Carolina residents this past June, and in October, the tribe issued

Minnesota Cities Exploring Idea of Municipal Dispensaries – WJON News

ST. JOSEPH (WJON News) — Municipal liquor stores are pretty common in Minnesota, could there one day be municipal dispensaries?

During its meeting on Monday night, the St. Joseph city council is going to have a very early initial discussion on the topic.

According to city documents, the current state law regarding cannabis authorizes cities to operate municipal cannabis retail stores.

The League of Minnesota Cities says there is a working group of a few dozen cities that are exploring the idea, including communities like Osseo and Wayzata.  The working group is looking into the option due to the potential revenue and tax impacts a municipal dispensary may offer.  The League does not believe that there are any municipal dispensaries anywhere in the United States.

One consideration is the legal ramifications and impacts of a dispensary allowed under state law, but still illegal under federal law.

Monday’s discussion by the St. Joseph City Council will just let staff know whether they should further explore the idea.

In 2022 176 Minnesota cities operated 211 municipal liquor stores with a majority of them in greater Minnesota.

Arkansas medical marijuana jobs top 3000, state says – Arkansas Times

GREEN ECONOMY: The state says more than 3,000 people work in the Arkansas marijuana industry.

The state medical marijuana industry directly employs more than 3,000 people, according to data and estimates from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Division.

The ABC has issued 3,229 Registry Identification Cards, commonly known as RIC cards, that allow employees and owners access to the state’s dispensaries, cultivation facilities and processing facilities. The figures include some duplication, but ABC spokesman Scott Hardin estimated duplicate cards account for less than 5% of the total.

Duplication would occur, for instance, if an owner has a stake in more than one cannabis business or if a security guard worked at more than one facility, Hardin said. Despite that wrinkle, Hardin said the figures, which were compiled in mid-January, represent a “good snapshot” of the industry’s direct employment.

Good Day Farm Cultivation in Pine Bluff has the most active cards of any cannabis business in the state with 366. BOLD Team of Cotton Plant has the next-highest number at 211.

Suite 443, the Hot Springs dispensary that has been the state’s top-seller in recent months, is the top dispensary with 176 active cards. The Source dispensary in Rogers is next with

Illinois marijuana industry takes major strides towards equity, state touts, but critics say more work, especially funds, needed – WLS-TV

CHICAGO (WLS) — One of the goals of legalizing marijuana in Illinois was to repair the damage of mass cannabis convictions among people of color. And while some critics say not enough has been done to level the playing field, the state said it’s proud of the steps it’s made over the last four years to make the industry attainable for everyone.

“When cannabis was illegal, 80% of arrests were Black and brown people,” said Matthew Brewer, owner of Grasshopper Club. “My brother was one of the people in the 80% arrested for cannabis possession.”

His brother’s arrest was one of the reasons Brewer wanted to get into the marijuana industry. He is now celebrating his first year as the proud owner of Grasshopper Club, the first independent Black-owned dispensary in Chicago.

“It was a full circle moment when we opened this location and the first purchase ever here was my brother,” he said.

Brewer’s co-owners for the Logan Square shop are his brother Chuck and his mother Dianne. She never could have imagined this venture in her wildest dreams as a Black woman.

When recreational marijuana became legal in Illinois in 2020, the first cannabis businesses to open were 100% majority white-owned, and
