Rochester voters to decide on marijuana dispensaries with ballot … – WXYZ 7 Action News Detroit

ROCHESTER, Mich. (WXYZ) — Two proposals on the ballot Nov. 7 would allow for marijuana dispensaries in the city of Rochester, but it’s not happening without a fight.

When marijuana was first legalized in Michigan, Rochester was one of many cities to opt out, but a new group gathered petitions to put the issue on the Rochester ballot.

If you drive down Main Street, it’s hard to not know about Tuesday’s election. Countless signs are urging voters to vote no on the proposals to bring up to three marijuana dispensaries to the city.

The proposals were drafted by the Open Stores in Rochester Committee based out of Ingham County, which collected hundreds of signatures to get the issue on the ballot. Some of their signs posted in town focus on the tax benefits to the city.

However Kim Russell, a business owner and Rochester resident, is pushing back. She says the tax revenues created would amount to 1% of the city’s budget. She recently launched the “No Pot on Main Street” Committee.

“It just really isn’t appropriate for our size and what we really have as a culture in downtown Rochester,” Russell said of dispensaries.

Russell has concerns about traffic and says the proposals were

Despite traffic worries, council backs pot shop in north Normal – 25 News Now

NORMAL (25News Now) – Traffic headaches were a concern of the only Normal Town Council member who opposed plans for a cannabis dispensary in north Normal.

The council voted 6-1 Monday night to approve plans for a dispensary called Ayr Wellness to move into vacant tenant space next to Moe’s Southwest Grill in the 1700 block of Bradford Lane, just off Raab Road.

Kathleen Lorenz cast the only no vote. Lorenz said she’s “not friendly” towards this type of special use.

“That area is congested,” said Lorenz.

“I’ve voiced considerable concern about the impact on traffic,” Lorenz also said.

The council previously approved plans for three other dispensaries for recreational marijuana use. Only one of them is operating so far.

“It’s among the most, if not the most stringent land use policy in Normal,” said Council member Kevin McCarthy, who voted with the majority.

Council member Andy Byars noted that the approval process has been done well, and there hasn’t been too much push-back.

“It’s a double thumbs-up for me,” Byars said.

This latest proposal was the first since the council added restrictions in August by doubling the distance to 200 feet between pot shops and schools, daycares and churches.

Florida medical marijuana dispensaries facing possible price hikes for license renewals – ABC7 News

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Cannabis dispensaries could see price hikes when they go to renew their license with the state, and doctors are worried for their patients in Fort Myers.

For the last six years, if you wanted to sell medical marijuana legally in the State of Florida, you had to pay the state $60,000 every two years for a license.

Now, Florida’s Department of Health and the state are asking for more.

“So, like, wait, it went from $60,000 to over $1,000,000; it went up 20x,” Dean and Mead lawyer Dan Russell said.

Sellers are being told to pay more than $1.3 million every two years to renew their licenses.

“I really think that you were missing the site that it’s actually medicine,” Heather Auld said. She is a doctor at Compassionate Cannabis Clinic along Colonial Boulevard.

Dr. Auld said medical cannabis, which she prescribes, should not be treated the same as alcohol distribution. Now she is worried for her patients.

“There are going to be fewer dispensaries applying for licenses in the State of Florida,” she said.

Florida lawyers with ‘Dean and Mead’ agree.

“Florida really can’t be in the business of making money off of sick people,”

Update: Dispensaries react to restraining order closing 3 marijuana businesses in Menominee – WLUC

MENOMINEE, Mich. (WLUC) – Update: Lume Cannabis Co. is speaking out after the Menominee store was shut down on Friday.

In a press release Tuesday, the company says that they applaud the city of Menominee’s efforts to support the 70 employees who were displaced when the Lume store and two other cannabis retailers were closed Friday.

Lume says that dozens of workers are filing for unemployment because of the closure.

On Monday, the city filed a motion in court to clarify the Friday ruling and highlight its negative impact on local workers.

“We are disappointed with Friday’s decision that suddenly closed Lume, which forces local workers to file for unemployment,” said Kevin Blair, Lume’s attorney. “We firmly believe Lume and the city of Menominee have complied with all laws, ordinances, and court orders. That’s exactly why we are supporting the city’s motion to get clarity on last week’s ruling and reopen the store without delay.”

In the press release. Lume Cannabis Co. says that during the permitting process, they received a perfect score of 50 out of 50 on its application.

“We respectfully disagree with the judge’s ruling,” said Doug Hellyar, president and COO of Lume. “Shuttering three stores in one single

Green Leaf Wellness joins businesses on move from Schenectady’s … – The Daily Gazette

SCHENECTADY — Green Leaf Wellness Co., a popular CBD business in Schenectady, is the latest Union Street business to announce it will be moving.

President and owner Sondra Stephens, and her son, company Vice President Anthony Kaczmarek, opened Green Leaf Wellness on Union Street about five years ago, right next door to their other local business, Sondra’s Fine Jewelry, open since 1997.

With a long history on upper Union, Stephens said she hopes to be able to eventually become licensed as a cannabis dispensary, but would not be able to do so at its current location.

“We would have hoped we could have stayed,” Stephens said. “It is hard leaving our beloved community, and we wished we didn’t have to.”

In municipalities with a population of more than 20,000 people, the New York State Office of Cannabis Management has a 1,000-feet rule, which requires licensed dispensaries to have a minimum of a 1,000-feet radius from other licensed dispensaries.

Green Leaf Wellness Co. is located at 1624 Union St., across the street from it, at 1613 Union St., is Upstate Canna Co., Don Andrews’ licensed dispensary, which opened as a dispensary in April.

Stephens said she does not want to fight the Office of Cannabis Management on
