Monterey Council slated to approve permits for four cannabis dispensaries – Monterey Herald

Four new retail cannabis dispensaries could be approved in Monterey, marking the first retail locations within the city limits.

During Tuesday’s council meeting, the City Council will be presented with the top four applicants and the waitlisted applicants.

A drawing will also be held to determine which zones the selected cannabis businesses will operate in — Lighthouse Avenue, Cannery Row, Downtown and North Fremont Street.

The top four applicants are Monterey Responsible and Compliant Retail LLC (Embarc), Element 7 SF$ LLC (Element 7), Monterey Pacific Retail Holdings, Inc. (Culture Cannabis Club), and OTC Monterey, LLC (Off the Charts.)

The council will vote on whether to issue store retail cannabis business permits to the top applicants and they will keep their spot contingent on successfully obtaining a zone clearance.

City staff announced that 13 applications were filed during the open application period from Dec. 15 to Jan. 29. The staff cut the number to eight through a “detailed application evaluation and review process.” The Selection Committee consisting of Mayor Tyller Williamson and Vice Mayor Kim Barber interviewed all eight candidates and selected the final four.

“As we approach the City Council’s final approval of cannabis retailers, we believe the City Council is poised to approve cannabis retailers

ARKANSAS – Medical marijuana sales in Arkansas have topped $1 billion since the first dispensary opened in 2019. Now, a group wants to expand access by changing the state constitution.

The ballet proposal would add nurse practitioners, physicians assistants and pharmacists to the list of medical professionals who can prescribe medical marijuana products.

It would also cover more medical conditions and extend the expiration date of a medical marijuana card to three years instead of the current one-year limit.

Cannabis dispensary approved at former Emily’s Bakery in Santa Cruz – Santa Cruz Local

The city council imposed some additional conditions on The Hook, including that it submit quarterly reports on fake IDs to the city, collaborate with the school district and community stakeholders, undergo an annual review of its permit and not sell to customers younger than 21 during school hours. California law allows cannabis sales to customers 21 and older and 18 and older with a physician’s recommendation.

The applicant, Bryce Berryessa, already had agreed to make the windows on the Mission Street storefront opaque, to have minimal exterior signs, to implement enhanced security measures and to not sell to anyone younger than 19.

“It’s not the right location,” said Santa Cruz City Councilmember Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson at Tuesday’s four-and-a-half-hour permit hearing. Even so, she agreed to “very reluctantly support it,” as long as the additional conditions are met. She referred to herself as “an ally and friend to the cannabis industry.”

The Mission Street site met the required zoning criteria to be more than 600 feet from all schools, parks, day cares, youth centers and other cannabis retail outlets. Santa Cruz police expressed no concerns about the location, according to a city staff report. The location attracted criticism for being just four

Report: Total U.S. Adult-Use Cannabis Taxes Have Surpassed $20 Billion

According to a recent Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) report, U.S. states with cannabis legalization policies have generated more than $20 billion in cannabis tax revenue since Colorado and Washington launched the country’s first legal, adult-use cannabis markets in 2014.

The report — which covers up to the first quarter of 2024 — found that 2023 was the highest-earning year yet with nearly $4.2 billion in cannabis tax revenue from adult-use sales. Among individual states, California earned the most last year at just over $1.08 billion, followed by Illinois ($552,166,729), Washington ($532,516,060), and Michigan ($473,303,560).

The report accounts for the excise and sales taxes for individual states and does not account for medical cannabis sales (or taxes).

“State-legal cannabis sales continue to provide significant economic benefits. With over $20 billion generated in adult-use cannabis tax revenue since the first sales began, the legal cannabis industry is providing much-needed funding for crucial services and programs in states across the country. Additionally, the implementation of adult-use cannabis markets has spurred significant job growth, creating hundreds of thousands of new employment opportunities, along with thousands of new small businesses.” — Karen O’Keefe, MPP’s director of state policies, in a press release

Ohio Adult-Use Cannabis Market on Track for June Launch

Ohio’s adult-use cannabis market is on track to launch in mid-June after lawmakers in the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review advanced the industry’s proposed regulations, the Associated Press reports.

State voters passed a cannabis legalization proposal last year which took effect in December, granting adults aged 21+ the right to possess, consume, and cultivate cannabis at home. But the voter-approved law also called for a fully operational and regulated adult-use market by September 7, which lawmakers have been working toward for months.

The new rules would create a dual-licensing program wherein existing medical cannabis dispensaries would be allowed to service the new, adult-use market. With the rules advancing on Monday, the application period for dual licenses allowing adult-use sales could open by June 7.

Tom Haren, spokesperson for the Ohio Cannabis Coalition, said in the report that he expects most of Ohio’s medical cannabis dispensaries will apply to be dual licensees. And future licensees will be ready quickly, he said.

“Our members have obviously been anticipating the rollout of adult-use sales. They’ve been working on getting processes in place, making whatever changes they need to to procedures. We’re really excited.” — Haren, via the AP

Local partners to open The Gas Station dispensary in Wayland – Grand Rapids Business Journal

Business partners that opened the first cannabis dispensary in Middleville are planning another store called The Gas Station, which is set to open in Wayland next month.

Village of Middleville residents Jarred Biggs and Dennis Weiss are the main investors behind the The Gas Station dispensary, located at 1124 W. Superior St. in Wayland, less than a half-mile east of the U.S. 131 interchange. Other partners on the project include Grand Rapids-based entrepreneurs Jonathan Jelks and Willie Jackson.

Biggs was drawn to the Wayland location because his family is from the area and the dispensary will be located about 4 miles south of Gun Lake Casino, which is undergoing an interior renovation and larger $300 million expansion that will add a 252-room hotel, spa, swimming pools and restaurant to the property.

“I just wanted to make sure I took advantage of all the growth happening in the area right now,” Biggs told Crain’s Grand Rapids Business.
