Texas Security Guard Shot 5 Times During Weed Dispensary Robbery Says He’s ‘Just Happy to Be Alive’ For His Kids – The Messenger

Almost a week after he was shot multiple times while on the job, a security guard in Texas now says that he’s “just happy to be alive.”

Jonah Duran was working as an armed guard at the Purple Dragon Cannabis Dispensary in San Antonio, which is owned by his cousin, when three men attempted to rob the place on Monday night at 3 a.m., KENS News reports. They were armed, but so was Duran, and two of the thieves fled after exchanging fire.

Duran was shot five times, three times in the neck, then once in his hand, and once in his leg. He was rushed to the hospital where he immediately underwent surgery. On Saturday, Duran had recovered enough to walk and speak and he told KENS News that he doesn’t remember much about the shooting that almost claimed his life.

“I’m just happy to be alive,” Jonah reportedly said. “I’m happy I’m still able to be around my kids.”

Nancy Duran, Jonah’s mother, told the news station that her son has three children, including an 8-month-old. She added that Jonah lost his father at a young age and she couldn’t imagine what would happen if Jonah’s kids lost their dad as well.

Security guard ‘happy to be alive’ after suffering 5 bullet wounds in gunfight at Texas weed dispensary – New York Post

A Texas security guard said he’s “happy to be alive” after he was reportedly shot five times during a wild caught-on-camera gunfight with three armed robbers who struck the cannabis dispensary where he works.

Jonah Duran had only been working at his cousin’s place, the Purple Dragon Cannabis Dispensary in San Antonio, for a few months when the robbers busted in at about 3 a.m. Saturday morning, according to CBS 5.

Duran — who was sitting on a couch when the raiders attacked — pulled his handgun and shot at the suspects, two of whom were armed themselves.

He hit one of the men, who fell to the ground as he leapt away from Duran’s bullets, the video showed.

The other gunman squeezed off a few rounds before he and the other robber fled.

But Duran prevailing in the terrifying shootout was not without cost, the station said.

The father-of-three was struck by five bullets — three in the neck, one in the hand and one in the leg, his mom Nancy said. At least one of those came from the wounded gunman, who pulled the trigger one last time when he saw Duran get off

Colorado Springs marijuana dispensaries closing after failure of recreational sales question – Colorado Springs Gazette

Since voters declined to legalize recreational marijuana sales in Colorado Springs in November 2022, dispensaries in town have started to close as proponents of the ballot question predicted.

The number of medical marijuana dispensaries in town is down from 114 to 96 since the ballot question, city data shows. Once dispensary licenses are surrendered to the city, they are no longer available and so the number can never rise.

Statewide issues, such as low prices, have hurt the industry and those problems have been compounded by the lack of recreational sales, said Liz Zukowski, a spokeswoman for Native Roots. The company operates locations across the state and in Colorado Springs.

Colorado has seen marijuana sales drop dramatically as other states have legalized it. Twenty-four states and the District of Columbia now allow recreational marijuana. A change in the 2018 Farm Bill has also given rise to the sale of THC products derived from hemp in states where recreational marijuana is not legal. For example, Delta-8 products are common in Texas and they can also be ordered online.

As marijuana tourism has fallen, so has the price of marijuana.

Those factors and others are hitting the industry hard causing stores and marijuana grows to close.

Wisconsin Senate GOP leader says state-run medical marijuana dispensaries are a ‘nonstarter’ – telegraphherald.com

MADISON, Wis. — Having state-run dispensaries for medical marijuana in Wisconsin as proposed by Assembly Republicans is a “nonstarter” in the Senate, but there’s still the possibility of reaching a compromise that could pass, the Senate GOP leader said Thursday.

Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu said at a WisPolitics.com event that the “challenge” for the Assembly bill is that many GOP senators are opposed to having the state operate the dispensaries.

Bellville planning commission to consider banning marijuana dispensaries – Richland Source

BELLVILLE — There won’t be any cannabis dispensaries operating in Bellville for at least six months.

Bellville’s village council imposed a temporary moratorium on cannabis businesses at its most recent council meeting Tuesday.

The resolution prohibits both medicinal and recreational cannabis businesses from operating within village limits for the next six months, according to council member Jason Guilliams.

The resolution was not on the agenda and was passed as emergency legislation.

Ohio medical marijuana company eyes crossroads property

The vote came just three weeks after Bellville’s planning commission considered a request from Standard Wellness, an Ohio medical marijuana company, to open a dispensary near the OH-97/I-71 interchange.

However, Bellville zoning inspector Larry Weirich confirmed the company applied for a conditional use permit to build and operate a facility on a 1.3 acre lot on State Route 97, directly north of Burger King.

“(Standard Wellness) wanted to put it in the B3 district, which is highway business, which allows for primarily hotels and restaurants,” Weirich said. “There’s also conditional uses, services stations, retail, things of that nature.”

Nate Warmath, who owns the land, told Richland Source the Standard Wellness plans

First marijuana dispensary opens in Teller County – Colorado Springs Gazette

CRIPPLE CREEK • The first marijuana dispensary in Teller County opened its doors last week.

The owners of High Stakes Leafery in Cripple Creek said they made more than $12,000 in sales in their first two days of opening and had more than 150 customers.

Laura and Robert Smith have owned multiple businesses in Cripple Creek.

“So my husband and I owned and ran the automotive shop here in town for about eight years, and recently sold that at the beginning of the year. We had a day spa here, but we also heard that Bronco Billy’s was opening up a spa, and so we didn’t want to compete with them,” Laura Smith said.

Unsure what their next business adventure would be, the Smiths thought about making the spa into an auto parts store. But Robert Smith had a more adventurous idea.

“All of a sudden, Robert came up to me one day,” Laura Smith said. “He goes, ‘what do you think about putting a dispensary in here?’ I said ‘um.’ Then I thought about it and I said OK, let’s do it.”

She said around eight months ago she and her husband began transforming what was once a spa into the first dispensary in Teller

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Having state-run dispensaries for medical marijuana in Wisconsin as proposed by Assembly Republicans is a “nonstarter” in the Senate, but there’s still the possibility of reaching a compromise that could pass, the Senate GOP leader said this week.

Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu said at a WisPolitics.com event that the “challenge” for the Assembly bill is that many GOP senators are opposed to having the state operate the dispensaries.

“It’s a nonstarter for a lot of our caucus members,” LeMahieu said. “Why would we let government grow the size of government?”

The highly restrictive bill unveiled this week by Assembly Republicans would limit medical marijuana only to severely ill people with chronic diseases such as cancer and allow for it to be dispensed at just five state-run locations. Smokable marijuana would not be allowed.

LeMahieu said creating a new office within the Department of Health Services to handle medical marijuana “seems like overkill.”
