Hell’s Kitchen Piano Bar Pivot to Legal Cannabis Dispensary Faces Regulatory Discord – W42ST magazine

The owner of a Hell’s Kitchen dueling piano bar has gained the support of the community board to transform his business into a legal cannabis dispensary — but state rules limiting the number of marijuana shops in an area could hit a sour note.

Steven Padernacht plans to transform Bar Nine, the piano bar he owns, into a licensed retail cannabis dispensary along with his lifelong friend Robert Lim. Padernacht has run Bar Nine since 2014 and is ready for a change; business has been down since the COVID-19 pandemic, and he’s hoping the burgeoning cannabis industry will prove more lucrative. “The foot traffic, specifically on [9th] Avenue, has changed dramatically,” he said.  “I think people have realized that they don’t have to go outside and they can have a good time at home.”

Padernacht grew up in the Bronx with Lim, who was incarcerated for 15 years on marijuana-related charges. Lim is a Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary (CAURD) license holder, a licensing program run by the New York Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) to provide opportunities for

Mansfield OH City Council considers marijuana dispensaries moratorium – Mansfield News Journal

Mansfield City Council held off voting on a bill related to marijuana-related businesses at its Tuesday meeting.

Council was scheduled to vote to impose a six-month moratorium “on the acceptance, consideration and/or granting of any applications for local licensing approval and/or any zoning, occupancy or other permits relating to cultivators, processors or retail dispensaries of marijuana within the City of Mansfield.”

In the Nov. 7 general election, the ballot measure dubbed Issue 2 passed with 57% of the vote, making Ohio the 24th state to legalize marijuana for adult recreational use.

Ethos Cannabis Philly medical marijuana shutting down – WHYY

From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? Let us know!

After four years in operation, Philadelphia-based Ethos Cannabis will close its flagship Center City retail location on the ground floor of the American Postal Workers House.

However, this won’t take effect until close of business on April 20, which is coincidentally 4/20 — a date synonymous with cannabis and known as the busiest day of the year for dispensaries, celebrating the popular marijuana holiday.

When it’s over, 11 employees at the retail store near 8th and Locust streets will lose their jobs, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing.

The company said it was “committed to supporting our team members during this transition” and workers will be paid through May.

The business is exploring a replacement location but that might not be in Center City, said Gibran Washington, Ethos Cannabis CEO.

Michigan communities are raking in benefits of legalized weed – Detroit Metro Times

As cannabis sales continue to hit new highs in Michigan, communities that embraced legal weed are reaping the rewards with an influx of jobs, tax revenue, community benefits, and renovated buildings.

The cannabis industry has seen tremendous growth since the state’s first adult-use dispensaries opened in December 2019, with sales hitting unprecedented levels year after year.

In 2023, licensed dispensaries rang up a record $3.06 billion in sales, a 25% increase over 2022.

The surge in demand for legal weed has not only transformed the landscape of the state’s economy but also revitalized communities that have allowed recreational cannabis businesses to open.

One of the most significant impacts is the cascade of tax revenue from cannabis sales. With a 10% excise tax on recreational cannabis sales, hundreds of millions of dollars have gone to local governments, schools, and roads since 2020.

The state recently sent more than $87 million to 269 municipalities and counties as part of their share of excise taxes in 2023. That includes 99 cities, 69 townships, and 71 counties.

The communities and counties each receive more than $59,000 annually for every licensed cannabis dispensary

4/20 is near. Closest marijuana dispensaries, weed deals, sales for cannabis holiday. – Courier Journal

4/20, a beloved holiday for marijuana users to toke up, is quickly approaching. While Louisville recently ranked as the worst city in the U.S. for weed, there are plenty of places to travel to for the perfect celebration.

Medicinal marijuana is coming to Kentucky in 2025, but not recreational. There are places for residents of the Bluegrass State to legally purchase and partake in the consumption of this magical plant — even if you can’t legally bring it back.

In Kentucky, possession of marijuana under 8 ounces is a punishable misdemeanor of up to 45 days in jail and a $250 fine. Second time offenders and those with larger amounts of marijuana are felony offenses, and would result in greater jail time and fines, according to NORML.

Public pot consumption event planned for 4/20 at Pure Options Frandor – Lansing State Journal

LANSING — Rapper Sean Kingston is headlining what could be the Lansing area’s biggest 4/20 legal pot party in the parking lot of a Frandor business on Saturday.

Marijuana retailer Pure Options is sponsoring the free event for people 21 and over. Christopher York, vice president of marketing for Pure Options, said it could be the largest public weed consumption event ever in Lansing.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 127 N. Clippert St. There will be food trucks, glass blowers and vendors.

Kingston, whose hits include “Fire Burning” and “Beautiful Girls,” which spent a month in 2007 as the #1 Billboard song, will perform in concert. York did not say when Kingston would perform.

Mansfield City Council approves weed ordinance — but not the marijuana kind – Richland Source

MANSFIELD — Mansfield City Council approved a weed ordinance Tuesday night.

But it had nothing to do with a moratorium on potential recreational cannabis dispensaries in the city.

On a night council amended city laws regarding the allowable length of noxious weeds growing in Mansfield, it opted to delay until June a vote on legislation that would place a six-month hold on any businesses that may wish to open a marijuana dispensary in the community.

Moments after the bill was introduced in caucus, 2nd Ward Councilwoman Cheryl Meier questioned the timing.

“My biggest concern is that we’re voting on this tonight. We’ve got one read and we’re voting on it,” Meier said. “It doesn’t give us an opportunity to hear from any citizens.

“(Could) somebody give us an answer on why we’re having to do it this evening?” Meier asked.

Mayor Jodie Perry, even as local lawmakers began to question the proposal, said it was not her original intention to have council vote on the moratorium Tuesday night.
