WEST HARTFORD — Town leaders have made changes to its cannabis dispensary ordinance that would allow for a third marijuana retail establishment to open in West Hartford.

But the change also further restricts where those recreational dispensaries can open.

Under the changes, which the Town Council approved on Tuesday, a third dispensary can now open in town, so long as its 5,000 feet away from the two existing dispensaries. Previously, the town’s ordinance only allowed for two.

A third dispensary would join Budr, which opened first in July of 2023, and Sweetspot, which opened earlier this year.

But if and when a new business looks to find that space, they won’t be able to consider West Hartford Center as a possibility. That’s because the ordinance explicitly states that cannabis dispensaries won’t be allowed in certain zoned areas, including the town center, parts of Elmwood, Blue Back Square and the easternmost portion of Farmington Avenue. They would, however, be allowed in Bishops Corner, and some other commercially zoned areas of town.
